The Parts of the Plant

This workshop is often conducted with “The Parts of The Seed.”  Mentors help students identify the main parts of a plant: Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, Fruit and Seed. Using examples from the market: Carrots, Celery, Lettuce, Broccoli, Tomato and Soy Beans, we remind students about the plant parts that we eat.   Mentors discuss the “fruit” of the plant. Students are asked to define the terms: Roots, Stems, Leaves, Flowers, Fruit and Seed and connect them directly to items at the market. Students create edible “Plant Part Art” using crackers and fresh peanut butter with specially prepared pieces of all the plant parts.  Students are asked to consider themselves as not only a scientist, and a gardener, but also as a “Culinary Artist.”  Handouts with illustrations and terms are provided, for the students garden journals.
